Parent Initiation

In an attempt to get some errands run and some fresh air, we decided to make the trek to Target and Babies R Us. In order to avoid the subway, we decided to walk. We felt like we had planned it well. We got all ready to go, fed Morgan and left right then so she would last longer. But we also took everything we could possibly need in case of hunger, diaper change, etc. We walked to Target, did our shopping and then were off to Babies R Us. We planned it that way because we knew that Babies R Us had to have a mothers room in case by this time Morgan was hungry. Then sure enough, she slept the whole time until we arrived at Babies R Us and then she was ready to eat. We fed her and changed her and were feeling pretty good by this point. Then we were ready to leave the store and head home. So we began to put Morgan back into her car seat/stroller which she does not like. She began to scream bloody murder! This was embarrassing enough being our first time experiencing this, but we knew once we got her moving she would be fine. Needless to say, we were rushing to get her situated and on our way when we hear "Ma'am, can I help you?" said in the tone of "what are you doing to that child?" Great, we are going to be reported for child abuse - we were thinking. We explain that we were just putting her back into her car seat and she doesn't like it.
Her response? "Do you hold her a lot?"
We respond with a skeptical "yes" because of course we do, she's a newborn.
"Oh, well that's why!"
Thank you Dr. Phil. We left feeling pretty stressed and inadequate. We had always heard that once you become a parent, people, even strangers start telling you all that you're doing wrong. We just didn't think it would happen so soon!

Oh I'm sorry guys! People are so lame. I think it's great you hold her so much, she is a newborn like you said. It's good for her, keep it up. Oh, and post more pics ;)

Don't worry... you can't spoil her. Hold her all the time. It's the only time you're only going to have one and by the time the next one comes you won't have the same opportunities. We get told the same thing about Sophia sleeping in our room, "If she sleeps in your room now she'll never sleep in her own bed"... response: "she's only 9 weeks for crying out loud." ;) Good luck! It gets easier- especially when you know exactly (well, almost exactly) what their cry means. Good luck!!

I have to say, two of the hardest things about parenting: 1. questioning everything you do and 2. having people give you feedback and "helpful suggestions".

I just know you're doing great!

My DD would SCREAM bloody murder every time she had to go in the carseat for the first 3 months of her life.
You are great parents!!! Just smile and say "Thank-you" every time you get advice from a stranger. (And sometimes friends and family too...)

I would have hit her. Or atleast told her to back off and let you get her calmed down! That is frustrating, sorry guys! How can you NOT hold a 4 week old all of the time?! Good job on the timing everything and planning your day out! I'm impressed.

I'm going to hold little Morgan anytime and as long as I can. She will grow up and then...... So my advice is get her out here so we can spoil her.

I agree with Julie (Not sure who that is :) ) My only advice to anyone is to smile, say thank you for the advise . . .and then do WHATEVER you want because she is yours. Trust me, the crying tantrums get worse when they can use words to tell everyone in Walmart what a terible parent you are. So, welcome to the parenting "We'll just wing it, because who really knows?" Club.

Love you guys . . . only two more weeks til we get to see you!!! :)

Yes I agree with Alicia and Julie. NOT ASHLEE! Don't hit anyone, that will do Morgan no good if you are both in jail. :)

People are stupid when they try to tell you about your own kid(s). Nobody will ever know better than you, but it is always embarrassing to listen to the baby cry in the middle of the store
